A fire door is a door with a fire-resistance rating which is used to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a structure and provides a safe exit route in the event of a fire. Fire doors give up to an hours fire and smoke protection.

A well designed fire door will delay the spread of fire and smoke without causing too much hindrance to the movement of people.

Fire doors have two important functions in a fire; when closed they form a barrier to stop the spread of fire and when opened they provide a means of escape.
