Compartmentalisation is a fundamental element of passive fire protection and is the action of dividing the building into sections, or ‘fire compartments’ by using fire boarding, fire doors, joint, filling and sealing.

To limit the spread of fire and smoke within a building we must compartmentalise: divide the space into several smaller sections in order to contain the fire in one space. This allows for time to evacuate the building and helps to keep the fire under control.
